Eric Dolphy – Jitterbug Waltz – Music Prophet : The Expanded 1963 New York Studio Sessions

Bass – Eddie Kahn
Drums – J.C. Moses
Trumpet – Woody Shaw
Vibraphone – Bobby Hutcherson

First official release of previously-unissued Eric Dolphy studio recordings in over 30 years, including 85-minutes never before released.  The 3-CD package is beautifully designed and includes an exhaustive booklet  with rare and never-before-published photos by Chuck Stewart, Jean-Pierre Leloir, Val Wilmer, Hans Harzheim, Lennart Steen, Roger Marshutz and many others, plus reproductions of the original album covers for Conversations and Iron Man. Includes five essays that cover different aspects of Eric Dolphy. Captured after leaving Prestige/New Jazz Records, and just before recording the timeless classic ‘Out to Lunch!’ album, ‘Musical Prophet’ is a 3LP set that contains the under-appreciated masterpieces ‘Conversations’ and ‘Iron Man’ recorded in New York City on July 1 and 3, 1963. Originally produced by Alan Douglas – most well-known for his association with Jimi Hendrix, but who also produced classic jazz albums such as ‘Money Jungle’ with Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and Max Roach – the tapes had been stored in a suitcase with Dolphy’s personal belongings and given to Dolphy’s close friends Hale and Juanita Smith just before he embarked on his fateful European trip in 1964.
Federica Michisanti Horn Trio – Morning Sewing – Silent Rides

Federica Michisanti, talented Italian double bassist, with her third album “Silent Rides”, plays with the conventions of line-up to create a fascinating set. Alongside Federica on bass, trumpet and flugel horn comes from Francesco Lento, and tenor saxophone and clarinet from Francesco Bigoni. The bass is released from it’s role as a rhythm instrument and becomes an equal partner in a three way conversation where roles are continuously interchanged. Echoes of the first Ornette Coleman Quartet, and the Jimmy Giuffre 3 emerge from an album of entertaining and thought provoking music. (2018)

NOTES

Greg Ward Rogue Parade – Metropolis – Stomping Off From Greenwood

Chicago-based saxophonist and composer Greg Ward (Tortoise, Lupe Fiasco, Makaya McCraven, Mike Reed) presents a new group, Rogue Parade, featuring a quintet of heavyweight creative Chicago musicians: Matt Gold and Dave Miller (guitar & effects), Matt Ulery (bass), and Quin Kirchner (drums).

Following his critically acclaimed Greenleaf debut ‘Touch My Beloved’s Thought’ in 2016, which was a re-imagining of the music of Charles Mingus, ‘Stomping Off From Greenwood’ highlights Ward’s skills as a writer and arranger with a set of eight new compositions that explore this unique two-guitar instrumentation, which blends the acoustic and electronic sonic worlds.

The group honed their ensemble sound during a month-long residency in Chicago, followed by extensive touring in the Midwest, before heading into the studio to capture the band’s energy on record. In addition to the original material, the band presents Ward’s moody arrangement of the jazz standard “Stardust.”
