SHOW NOTES

This week music from Lioness, Time Grove, Tom Rainey Trio, David Torn Tim Berne & Ches Smith, DKV Trio with Joe McPhee, and a focus on Ernesto Cervini’s Turboprop.

 Lioness – You Don’t Say – Pride & Joy (Posi-tone)

Marc Free of the Posi-Tone label is happy to present Pride & Joy, the third in a series of projects he is curating specially for the label in 2019. The album features Lioness, a collaborative all-woman sextet — accomplished top-tier players, many of whom have worked as leaders or sidepeople for the label.

The three formidable horns in the Lioness front line are baritone saxophonist Lauren Sevian, tenor saxophonist Jenny Hill and alto saxophonist Alexa Tarantino. (Sevian is fresh from her own 2018 Posi-Tone date Bliss, which featured Tarantino, who will soon release her own debut on the label.) On drums is Allison Miller, hands-down one of jazz’s most sought-after players and respected bandleaders. On organ is Akiko Tsuruga, swinging deep in the Hammond tradition and bringing endless modern tonal color and harmonic subtlety. On guitar, Free’s co-musical director for the recording, Amanda Monaco returns to Posi-Tone after her own 2017 organ date Glitter (featuring Sevian), soaring on a beautiful organ-trio interpretation of “Mocha Spice” by the late unheralded guitar master Emily Remler.

Time Grove – Second Attention – More Than One Thing

The debut album from forward-thinking Tel Aviv based ensemble, Time Grove. Guided by acclaimed pianist Nitai Hershkovits alongside one third of Buttering Trio, and newly signed Stones Throw recording artist, Rejoicer, this group of musicians have produced a sound which is both delicate yet powerful; sonorous yet uplifting. The full line-up also features reed player Eyal Talmudi, drummers Roy Chen, Amir Bresler and Sol Monk, keyboard master Bemet, trumpeter Sefi Zisling, and guitarist Yonatan Albalak.  Reminiscent of Tortoise and St Germain in places/

2019 Intakt Records CD 316

In his trio, Tom Rainey – one of the busiest drummers on the New York scene – has united with two of his closest musical allies. Ingrid Laubrock, the saxophonist extraordinaire who left England for the USA some years ago, causing quite a stir with her own band projects as well as in groups from Anthony Braxton to Mike Reed. Plus Mary Halvorson who in recent years has earned herself a superb reputation as one of the most interesting guitarists in contemporary Jazz and has worked in projects with musicians ranging from John Zorn to Yo La Tengo, as well as with her own groups.
Both Laubrock and Halvorson who are also active composers took first places in the DownBeat 2018 Int’l Critics Poll. With these outright individualists Rainey founded his trio in 2009 which now celebrates its tenth anniversary.
The album was recorded live in the Firehouse 12 in New Haven, Connecticut, in front of an audience (concert hall and studio at the same time) neither renouncing studio quality nor the aura of an audience. David Torn, whom Tom Rainey has known for a long time as a musician and studio specialist, took over the post-production. With Combobulated Rainey takes another giant step into the future.

David Torn, Tim Berne, Ches Smith – Eye Meddle – Son of Goldfinger

Guitarist-composer David Torn, a longstanding ECM artist, has enjoyed a particularly fruitful 21st-century with the label, releasing two albums under his own name – the solo only sky and quartet disc Prezens – in addition to producing records by Tim Berne and Michael Formanek. With Sun of Goldfinger, Torn returns in a trio alongside the alto saxophonist Berne and percussionist Ches Smith (a member of Berne’s Snakeoil band who made his ECM leader debut in 2016 with The Bell). The Torn/Berne/Smith trio, also dubbed Sun of Goldfinger, features alone on two of this album’s three intense tracks of 20-plus minutes; the vast sonic tapestry of “Eye Meddle” which I’ve just played is  a spontaneous group composition –   only a trio making all of that sound, with live electronics by Torn and Smith expanding the aural envelope.

DKV & Joe McPhee – Ebe Hanim – The Fire Each Time

6CD Box  set of recordings from the DKV Trio with Joe McPhee as a guest, and dedicated to James Baldwin. The music was recorded during the quartet’s tour in Europe which took place in November of 2017, and at shows in Chicago and Milwaukee from December of that year. These performances are historic in many respects: the DKV Trio (with Hamid Drake [drums], Kent Kessler [bass], and Ken Vandermark [reeds]) has only recorded with other musicians on four occasions in it’s two decade career (with Fred Anderson, [Okka Disk, 1997]; Joe Morris on “Deep Telling” [Okka Disk, 1999]; with Mats Gustafsson, Paal Nilssen-Love and Massimo Pupillo on “Schl8hof” [Trost, 2013], and with The Thing [“Collider,” Not Two, 2016]); also, this is the first time all four musicians have worked together as a band; and the material documented over the six concerts included in the collection features performances of Joe McPhee’s compositions (like “Nation Time”) as well as completely improvised music generated by the participants.

CD2 (4-8): Recorded by Bartek Olszewski at Klub Dragon, Poznan, Poland on November 15, 2017.
