NOTES
- Mark Corrin – from the new solo album “Washed Up” released on May 1st on German Shepherd Records. More electronic and less punk than last years “Pub Bin” , Mark is in fine form commenting on the stormy weather both politically and meteorologically in the early months of 2020.
- The Room In The Wood – from the new album “We’re The Martians, Now” they continue to produce great tunes.
- The Stress of Leisure- a new single sent over by Pascalle and Ian. A band with an innate sense of fun but with a waspish tongue about the idiosyncracies of life. Check out their back catalogue on Bandcamp – you won’t regret it. This track was recorded as part of the sessions for the last album.
- Flat Worms – from the new album “Antartica”
- Cable Ties – from the new album “Far Enough”
- Dave Graney & Clare Moore – my ongoing raiding of the back catalogue has reached the superb double album “Hashish & Liquor” wherein Dave leads on one CD and Clare on the other. The plan is to play a track from each CD in a yin and yang type way, over the next few weeks.
- Kory Quinn & Co – an e-mail from Kory brought this new album to my attention. I’m usually pretty wary about modern Blues/Americana but this guy knows what he is doing and can be favourably compared with Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt etc
- On Diamond – finalising my coverage of the four track “Remixes” EP celebrating the anniversary of the release of the debut album. These two tracks are bit more “out there”.
- Peter Hammill -two more from the 7th CD of the Not Yet Not Now box set – with a classic from “The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage” and from 12 years later from “As Close As This”.
- Songs of Tales – it’s jazz Jim but not as we know it. A canadian supergroup featuring the exceptional Gordon Grdina. The album is called “Live Is A Gong Show” and manages to step outside of the confines of the usual genre boxes.
- The Cravats – more from the wonderful “Hoorahland”
- The Dream Syndicate – another track from the remarkable “The Universe Inside” – a strong contender for album of the year.
- The Fall – from the recently remastered version of Bend Sinister – the shenanigans around the recording of this album are legendary and the remaster brings the songs to life whereas previously they had suffered from MES’s direction (or lack of it)- this track in particular finds the group at their best and I’d argue that this album is superior to the much vaunted predecessor. The Fall are a bit like Doctor Who – depending on how old you are there’s a particular version of the Fall that you like. Bend Sinister is a bit like mid period Tom Baker – a little grumpy at times but at the height of his powers (the search for The Key To Time era).
