This week a tribute to the legendary McCoy Tyner, music from Chet Baker and David Murray plus the new album from Christopher Hollyday….

The great McCoy Tyner passed on March 6th. With a stellar career, best known as part of the great John Coltrane Quartet, and a respectable solo discography, he is one the giants of jazz in the late 20th and early 21st century.

Also on the show great cuts from trumpet maestro Chet Baker and the great tenor saxophonist David Murray. There’s also a cut from Christopher Hollyday who has a brand new album out…..

  • McCoy Tyner “Moment’s Notice” from Passion Dance  (Blue Note)
    • Passion Dance is a 1978 live album  his fourteenth release on the Milestone label. It was recorded in July 1978 at the Live Under the Sky festival in Tokyo, Japan and features predominantly solo performances by Tyner, with two tracks including Tony Williams and Ron Carter. That was one of them Coltrane’s Moments Notice
  • 2 John Coltrane “I Want To Talk About You” from Live at Birdland (Impulse)
    • released in January 1964 by Impulse! Records.  Despite its title, only the first three tracks were recorded live at the Birdland club; the rest are studio tracks.  “I Want to Talk About You”, a song Coltrane had recorded on his 1958 album Soultrane, this time with an extended cadenza.

  • 11 McCoy Tyner “Contemplation” from The Real McCoy (Blue Note)
    • The seventh album by  Tyner and his first released on the Blue Note label. It was recorded on April 21, 1967 following his departure from the John Coltrane Quartet and features performances by Tyner with Joe Henderson, Ron Carter and Elvin Jones. Producer Alfred Lion recalls the recording session as a “pure jazz session. There is absolutely no concession to commercialism, and there’s a deep, passionate love for the music embedded in each of the selections”.
