3CD and 1DVD box set of the “lost quintet” playing in France (July), Sweden and Germany (November). A large proportion of the material is from the extant “Bitches Brew” album and the rest from the second great quintet period, although some “older” material does appear. Miles in joined by Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette, a criminally unrecorded band. This line-up, other than DeJohnette, recorded half of the “Filles De Kilimanjaro” album although interestingly none of the material from that release is played live here. Miles is on the cusp of the change between pure jazz and his electric period with the recording of “In A Silent Way” occurring in February of this year, and “Bitches Brew” in the August, although the instrumentation and application for these dates is more jazz than rock, an approach which would change with the addition of Steve Grossman, Airto Moreira and Keith Jarrett to the line-up, and the departure of Wayne Shorter, in 1970 for the Fillmore recordings. This is an amazing band and their interpretation of the material is remarkable (2013).
